The installation is part of  a three-year project geared towards the development of a Yacht Tourism Based Social Enterprise that is funded by Shell Trinidad and Tobago.

The following is a press release from the Environmental Research Institute Charlotteville:

The Environmental Research Institute Charlotteville (ERIC) and Department of Marine Resources and Fisheries (DMRF) recently partnered for a much-needed yacht mooring buoy installation and tourism project in Charlotteville.

Charlotteville is one of the eco-tourism hot-spots in the North-East Tobago UNESCO Man and the Biosphere Area which aims to support sustainable tourism development and improve the well-being of residents.

This activity is the second phase of a three – year project to develop a Yacht Tourism Based Social Enterprise that is funded by Shell Trinidad and Tobago. It includes the beautification of the Charlotteville Jetty, installation and maintenance of 15 mooring buoys, and assisting the Charlotteville Police Youth Club to develop a social enterprise capitalising on yacht tourism

The installation team, comprising ERIC Staff and officers of the Department of Marine Resources and Fisheries (DMRF) were sent off with best wishes from Chief Secretary, Farley Augustine, Acting Director of the DMRF, Crystal Edwards, and ERIC’s CEO, Aljoscha Wothke.

Once completed by the end of August, 15 moorings will be provided to visiting yachts in Man o War Bay, all of which will once and for all eliminate the damage of normal anchoring chains to our fragile reefs. Income from mooring fees will be used to regularly inspect and maintain the moorings. 30% of the fees will also be shared with our partner organisation, the Charlotteville Police Youth Club, to support its ongoing initiatives to assist community members in need and regenerate a healthy environment.
