A yacht moor­ing has been in­stalled at Char­lot­teville in To­ba­go. Ac­cord­ing to a press re­lease from the  En­vi­ron­men­tal Re­search In­sti­tute Char­lot­teville, the moor­ing is the first of fif­teen to be in­stalled.

The in­stal­la­tion is part of  a three-year project geared to­wards the de­vel­op­ment of a Yacht Tourism Based So­cial En­ter­prise that is fund­ed by Shell Trinidad and To­ba­go.

The En­vi­ron­men­tal Re­search In­sti­tute Char­lot­teville (ER­IC) and De­part­ment of Ma­rine Re­sources and Fish­eries (DM­RF) re­cent­ly part­nered for a much-need­ed yacht moor­ing buoy in­stal­la­tion and tourism project in Char­lot­teville. 

Char­lot­teville is one of the eco-tourism hot-spots in the North-East To­ba­go UN­ESCO Man and the Bios­phere Area which aims to sup­port sus­tain­able tourism de­vel­op­ment and im­prove the well-be­ing of res­i­dents. 

This ac­tiv­i­ty is the sec­ond phase of a three – year project to de­vel­op a Yacht Tourism Based So­cial En­ter­prise that is fund­ed by Shell Trinidad and To­ba­go. It in­cludes the beau­ti­fi­ca­tion of the Char­lot­teville Jet­ty, in­stal­la­tion and main­te­nance of 15 moor­ing buoys, and as­sist­ing the Char­lot­teville Po­lice Youth Club to de­vel­op a so­cial en­ter­prise cap­i­tal­is­ing on yacht tourism 

The in­stal­la­tion team, com­pris­ing ER­IC Staff and of­fi­cers of the De­part­ment of Ma­rine Re­sources and Fish­eries (DM­RF) were sent off with best wish­es from Chief Sec­re­tary, Far­ley Au­gus­tine, Act­ing Di­rec­tor of the DM­RF, Crys­tal Ed­wards, and ER­IC’s CEO, Aljoscha Wothke. 

Once com­plet­ed by the end of Au­gust, 15 moor­ings will be pro­vid­ed to vis­it­ing yachts in Man o War Bay, all of which will once and for all elim­i­nate the dam­age of nor­mal an­chor­ing chains to our frag­ile reefs. In­come from moor­ing fees will be used to reg­u­lar­ly in­spect and main­tain the moor­ings. 30% of the fees will al­so be shared with our part­ner or­gan­i­sa­tion, the Char­lot­teville Po­lice Youth Club, to sup­port its on­go­ing ini­tia­tives to as­sist com­mu­ni­ty mem­bers in need and re­gen­er­ate a healthy en­vi­ron­ment.
